Casino is a fascinating movie from Martin Scorsese that takes us inside the world of Las Vegas casinos. Based on a book by Nicholas Pileggi, who had full access to the man who ran four casinos for the mob in Vegas, it makes us feel like we are eavesdropping on this secret world. Like Scorsese’s previous Mafia movies – “Mean Streets” and “GoodFellas” – it is as much about history as it is about plot, character and action.
It is a film filled with interesting details, from the tacky 1970s period decor (Rita Ryack did the costumes) to the moment where Ace orders the casino cooks to put exactly the same number of blueberries in the muffins. The scene where the airborne feds are circling over a golf course while spying on the low-level hoods is just as compelling as when Ace and Ginger are juggling money at the blackjack table.
