The Casino Business

A casino, like any business, is a gambling establishment that takes bets and offers the chance to win prizes. Many casinos offer a wide variety of games and often include shopping centers, stage shows, elaborate hotels and dazzling decor. While these extras add to the overall entertainment value of a casino, they would not exist without the billions of dollars in profits generated by casino gambling. The games played in a casino include slot machines, poker, blackjack, roulette, craps and keno. In addition, some Asian casinos also offer traditional Far Eastern games such as sic bo (which became popular in several European and American casinos in the 1990s), fan-tan and pai gow.

Casinos earn their money from a small percentage of bets placed by patrons. This advantage, called the house edge, can be very low–lower than two percent, but over millions of bets it can provide a substantial profit for a casino. This is why most casinos give big bettors extravagant inducements such as free spectacular entertainment, luxurious living quarters and even reduced-fare transportation and hotel rooms.

The popularity of casino gambling has led to some interesting developments. In the past, gangsters controlled most of the major casinos, but real estate investors and hotel chains soon realized how lucrative they could be. With deep pockets, they bought out the mobsters and began operating casinos without mob interference. Even so, something about casino gambling seems to attract people who want to cheat or steal. Fortunately, casino security systems are high-tech and sophisticated, with cameras in the ceiling that watch every table, window and doorway.
