What is a Slot?

Slot

A narrow opening, usually in a machine, for receiving something, as coins or a letter. Often used in reference to the position of a person in an organization or a series of events. He had a slot as the chief copy editor at the Gazette.

In a slot machine, a coin or paper ticket with a barcode is inserted into the slot and activates a mechanism to spin the reels. When a winning combination of symbols lines up, the player receives credits from the machine. Each machine has a pay table, displayed either on the face of the slot machine or, in video slot machines, within a help menu. The odds of a particular sequence appearing on the pay line are based on how frequently each symbol appears on the physical reels.

Variance: Depending on the type of slot machine, a machine’s variance determines how often it pays out and how large its wins are. A high variance slot may not pay out for a long time but when it does, the payout will be larger. A low volatility slot may pay out less frequently but when it does, the payout will be smaller.

In software, a reusable piece of code, such as a function that executes some sort of data fetch or pagination, can be assigned to a slot using a directive. This allows a developer to delegate the logic of a manual render function to a component, while maintaining control over the visual output.
