Poker is a card game that can be played with two or more people. It is a game of chance, wherein the player with the best 5-card hand wins the money put down as buy-in. Players place bets with chips (representing money) into a pot, the total amount of which is called the “pot.” The highest-ranking poker hands are pairs, three-of-a-kind, straights, and flushes.

There are many different variations of poker, but they all have certain characteristics in common. One is that the cards are dealt face-down and are hidden from other players, except for one card (the high-card), which is revealed to all players. One of the rules of poker is that the first person to reveal his or her cards must make a bet. This is called being in the pot, and it gives other players the opportunity to call (match or exceed) that bet and compete for the pot.

Some players choose to bluff, betting that they have the best hand even though they do not. Others simply fold, thereby dropping out of the game and losing their chips.

In some variants, there is a designated dealer who is responsible for shuffling the cards and dealing them to each player. Usually, this is a non-player, but in other games, each player takes turns being the dealer for a round of play. A special chip is used to designate the dealer, and that chip is passed to a new player at the end of each round.
