What is a Casino?

A casino (or gaming house) is a place for certain types of gambling. Casinos are often combined with hotels, restaurants, retail shops and other tourist attractions. They are also known for hosting live entertainment events such as musical performances and stand-up comedy acts. Casinos can be found worldwide and attract tourists from all over the world.

Gambling probably predates recorded history, with sbobet primitive protodice and carved six-sided dice from the earliest archaeological sites [Source: Schwartz]. The modern casino as a gathering place for multiple forms of gambling under one roof first appeared in the 16th century during a craze for Italian aristocrats to party in places called ridotti.

While many casinos offer other forms of entertainment, such as dazzling fountain shows and luxury accommodations, they would not exist without games of chance. Slot machines, poker, blackjack, craps, baccarat and other games of chance provide the billions in profits that casinos bring in every year.

Though a large part of the casino business is based on luck, the casinos have learned how to manipulate the odds to their advantage. They hire mathematically savvy people to calculate the house edge and variance for each game. Those who do this work are called gaming mathematicians and gaming analysts. Casinos have also begun using technology to help keep track of their games, including roulette and dice. Bets made with chips that have built-in microcircuitry are monitored minute-by-minute, and the casinos are alerted immediately if any statistical deviation occurs.
