Casino Movie Review
Casino is a masterfully constructed film that focuses on the nitty gritty of the mob. It’s a story of greed, hubris, and destruction that is both fascinating and harrowing.
The film is based on the book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas by Nicholas Pileggi. It tells the true story of a faction of the mob that ran casinos in Las Vegas, including the Tangiers. Robert De Niro gives a performance that combines his signature style with the gritty details of the mob world to create an unforgettable character. Sharon Stone is also incredible as the con-artist trophy wife who steals every scene she’s in. Joe Pesci adds a menacing touch as the loose-cannon casino manager Sam Rothstein.
Despite the thrill of gambling, it’s important to remember that casino games are designed to make money for the house. A player may be ahead in the short term, but over time, the house edge will grind them down to bankruptcy. That’s why casino designers use flashing lights, engaging sounds, and dynamic atmosphere to stimulate the senses and amplify emotion. These factors can short-circuit the logical decision-making part of the brain and leave players making decisions impulsively. The rapid betting cycles of casino games also reduce the time a player has to stop and think before making another bet. All these factors can lead to a vicious cycle where the player continually makes bets they shouldn’t. Luckily, there are ways to break the cycle. Set win/loss limits, and play in moderation. It is also helpful to play with friends who can help control your behavior.
