Poker is a card game played by two or more players and involves betting money (called chips) into a pot. There are usually multiple rounds of betting in a hand and the player with the highest five-card poker hand wins the pot. The game may be played in cash games or tournaments. A tournament is a series of matches, often with a fixed number of competitors, in which the winners are determined by the sum of points (or other similar measure) awarded to each player in the individual matches. This form of competition is common in team and racket sports, combat sports, many board games and some forms of competitive debating.

Poker involves incomplete information and is a game of chance, but over time, skill can eliminate the random elements of luck from the result of any particular hand. Players must ante something into the pot to be dealt cards and each round of betting is initiated by a mandatory bet (called blinds) placed into the pot by players to the left of the dealer.

When it is a player’s turn to bet, they must either call the amount of the previous bet or raise it. In addition, players can “check” when they do not want to bet; this means that they pass on their turn to act and will only bet if someone else does before them. The aim of the game is to make a poker hand of 5 cards using your own two personal cards and the five community cards on the table.
