Poker is a game played by two or more players. Each player has a fixed number of chips to bet with, and the object of the game is to make the best 5-card hand using your own two cards (your “hand”) and the five community cards. The best hand wins the pot.

Each betting interval is begun by a player placing a bet in the pot. Each player then has the option to either call the amount staked by his predecessor, or raise it further. If a player is unwilling to do either, he must fold.

If no player has a good 5-card hand, the round ends in a showdown, where each remaining player shows their cards and the best hand takes the pot. Often a single player will win the entire pot of money in this way, but sometimes several players tie for the best hand and share the prize.

The game is often played in a casino or card room, and the players may be seated around a table that has been set up for the purpose. There is usually a dealer, who is responsible for shuffling the cards and dealing them to each player. A chip is passed to the new dealer after each betting interval, and this role rotates among the players in turn. The game can also be played with a non-player as the dealer. Some players employ a variety of mechanisms to misinform their opponents about the strength of their hands, including raising large bets to scare weaker players into folding before the showdown.
