The Basics of Poker
Poker is a card game played by two or more players with chips (money to bet with). Each player has 2 cards that they hide from other players and 5 community cards. Each player aims to make the best 5 card hand using a combination of their own 2 cards and the community cards.
Before the cards are dealt there is an initial amount of money put into the pot that is called a forced bet. These are generally placed by the players to the left of the dealer. Then a round of betting takes place, where a player can call, raise or fold. The players who have the highest hand show their cards and win the pot.
The game also involves bluffing. This requires reading other player’s cues, such as their body language and the shape of their facial expressions. Professional poker players are experts at extracting signal from noise and making use of it both to exploit their opponents and protect themselves.
One of the key elements of the game is that there are a lot of risks involved in it, just like life. But in both cases the reward is greater than the risk if you play your cards right. The ability to separate the controllable and uncontrollable, the known from the unknown is what separates a good poker player from a bad one.
