Poker is a card game in which players independently try to assemble the highest-valued hand of cards. Players place bets into a pot and then show their hands after the betting has concluded. The game has several variants, but all involve betting and bluffing to some extent. The game can be played in cash games or tournaments. The best professional players are expert at extracting signal from noise and integrating information from multiple channels to exploit opponents and protect themselves.

The game starts with each player buying in for a set amount of money, usually in the form of poker chips. A white chip is worth one unit, a red chip is worth five units, and a blue chip is worth either 10 or 20 units. In most live poker games, the players must have a minimum of 200 chips to participate.

After the ante is placed, each player receives two hole cards. The next round of betting begins, triggered by 2 mandatory bets called blinds put into the pot by the players to their left. Players can call, raise or drop (fold).

Once all the players have called the bets, another card is dealt face up. If all players raise, they must reveal their cards and the player with the best five-card hand wins the pot.

In some games, players can also win a pot by having the best three-card hand or the best pair. A pair is made up of 2 matching cards of the same rank, and a three-card straight is 3 consecutive cards of the same rank.
